Marie's Story

"Marie's Story" cover

Orphaned after their mother dies from a mysterious illness, Marie and Gustave live with their aunt on the slopes of Mòn Ferrière, Haiti. They attend school, where they are taught by no-nonsense but loving Sister Thérèse, and earn pocket money by guiding tourists up to La Citadelle, a great fortress at the top of the mountain. Despite poverty they are happy, but Marie, like her mother, falls ill, while one of her best friends is sent to work as a domestic servant in a nearby city. As Marie descends into the grip of her disease, societal crises mirror the breakdown of her body as life and death battle over a fragile and perilous landscape.
